Just For Us- Minor Discourse

With the creation of BET(Black Entertainment Television) in 1980, black entertainers had a place to showcase their work. The channel features programming that is written and produced by blacks and created for black audiences. A majority of the programming features comedy. Shows such as Comic View are full of jokes that play up black stereotypes. Minor discourse comedy is used as a defense mechanism to retain power. "We can poke fun at ourselves and still stand."



Magazines such as Ebony, Jet, and Essence are geared toward black women. But the ads featured in the magazine advertise products appeal solely to to black women.

Here is an ad for the children's relaxer, Just For Me. This product is created especially for black girls so it make sense only feature the ad in a black magazine. Stereotype? No. Racism? No.
