What Is a Stereotype?

According to the Merriam-Webster website, the word stereotype includes three definitions. There are two, however, that stand out.
1: a plate cast from a printing surface.
2: something conforming to a fixed or general pattern; especially : a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment.

Notice the picture above. This character, Chief Wahoo, is the mascot for the Cleveland Indians. He is obviously supposed to be Native American. To the general American public, all Native Americans are warriors who wear feathers and have red skin. This is the mental picture that American hold because this is the picture that is depicted by the media; a plate cast from a printing surface.
